The Details
While no two sessions are alike, as every individual holds tension differently and moves with unique biomechanics as a result, there are still aspects I strive to keep consistent across the board.

Sports
Less lubricant, more specific, faster pace. Sports massage utilizes a combination of various techniques and modalities, movement specific stretches, percussion therapy and heat therapy to develop a routine specifically curated to the types of stressors most common to your given sport(s).
It is generally beneficial to receive this type of work to prepare for peak performance, treat injuries or prevent injuries due to overuse. Sports massage helps promote blood circulation and aids in lymphatic drainage (i.e. lactic acid). Additional benefits include work towards the breakdown of scar tissue and curbing anxiety levels.
While not completely consistent across the board for every person in every sport, research has shown that massage is best to receive after long bouts of exercise or post races/events to help promote and speed up recovery.
Some studies have found that massage may improve strength in muscles damaged from overuse and athletes have reported faster recovery time from overexertion.
It has also been reported that Immune System Recovery is supported with post-exercise massage work.
Sports FAQs
-
Sports Massage is more targeted to the client’s needs than traditional massage.
The strokes tend to be faster and firmer, targeting the muscle groups you use in your given sports / activity or injury recovery. It also focuses on the areas you’re prone to injury to improve strength and mobility.
Sports techniques utilize more compression, cross-fiber friction, and shaking / vibration, promoting increased blood flow and removal of irritants such as Lactic Acid.
-
It is beneficial to make this a part of your regular sports recovery routine; especially before and after a race or competition.
Competitive athletes go 1-2 times per week. Weekend warriors, once a month.
Pre-event massage preps the muscles. Post-event aids in recovery.
-
Benefits include: reduced muscle tension, increased joint range of motion and flexibility, improved circulation, faster recovery from intense training, decreased risk of injury, and enhanced performance.
It can also help with pain and stiffness from athletic activity or soreness you get from getting back into a routine.
-
Most commonly, Sports massage is done unclothed with a drape. If you prefer, it can be done over the clothes without lubricant. Form fitting athletic attire such as yoga pants is best. Let me know if you have any injuries that might require special draping / consideration.
Deep Tissue
Often thought of as meaning deeper pressure (which is a part of it), this modality is more about the thought and intension behind the work.
Deep Tissue massage is a slower paced modality that attempts to “listen” to the muscles, working on the surface and deep level muscle tissues simultaneously, as well as the fascia surrounding them, to work out the built up tension life throws at you.
These sessions are generally full body comprehensive, but hone in on target areas that are in need of more meaningful touch, and work on the entire length of that muscle.
Typically, I will spend more time on focus areas, going over the muscles multiple times to be as thorough as possible.
Occasionally, Percussion Therapy will be incorporated when appropriate to add to this intentional work to encourage a better release of knots and adhesions.
Deep Tissue
FAQs
-
Utilizes slow, forceful pressure with the intention of reaching the deeper layers of muscles tissue generally overlooked. Slower strokes also helps lower blood pressure and anxiety.
-
Deeper pressure helps relieve chronic aches and pains, reduce muscle spasms and treat injuries.
-
Pain is never intended, but there is definitely some discomfort involved as you work to removed knots and tension.
-
Deep Tissue is used to remove tension and knots universally. Focuses on improving mobility and hits every muscle group, working on balancing the tension throughout the tissue.
Frederick Stretch Therapy
(Formally known as Fascial Stretch Therapy)
Myofascial Release uses specific techniques focusing on the fascia (tissue surrounding the muscle) and joint capsule to stretch and repair the connective tissue. It helps your body heal properly from injuries, increase mobility and can restore range of motion with minimal to no pain.
With the client fully clothed, this specific modality uses straps to comfortably but securely restrain the opposite limb from the focus to the table to allow a deeper stretch capability. Traction is applied to the focus limb during the stretch to increase benefits and allow the tissue to expand in a more meaningful way.
